Gamification of the working environment

More and more people consider fun as being an important reason to choose one job over the other. Next to that it is well known that results are better when employees are having fun at what they do. In other words, fun at work improves employee satisfaction and positively contributes to the results.

This imposes a new challenge for management, making the workplace fun. During this session I would like to talk about different ways of gamification of the working environment. How it can benefit the organization and the employees, what the pitfalls are and how to prevent them.

  1. Gamification can bring fun, but it also brings risks of replacing intrinsic motivation with extrinsic ones.

    It certainly seems a theme, lately, and discussing how it can be done well, avoiding those pitfalls, would be very useful.

  3. Depends on what you define as fun and game: The Definitive Guide to Scrum: The Rules of the Game (Scrum Guide 2011); great Scrum can be game like, so +1 from me

  4. It is unclear to me how this session is going to be collaborative and participative. Will it be a discussion? A fishbowl session? A brainstorm? Something else?

    The intention of this session is to have a discussion / brainstorm session how gamification concepts can be part of the work environment.

    I can see the benefits of it but implementations of gamification and the "rewards" that can be gained from it by personnel usually result in extrinsic motivators.

    For me the goal would be to discuss and try to identify different levels of gamification and to brainstorm about the possibility to apply gamification in a work environment with knowledge workers that are mostly motivated by intrinsic motivators.
